Sharkey – Road Markings Make N53 Road More Dangerous

Tomas Sharkey PhotoSinn Féin Councillor Tomás Sharkey has criticised new road markings on the Castleblayney Road (N53) and says that they will make ‘an already dangerous stretch of road more lethal to motorists.’

Tomás Sharkey said “In recent days the continuous white line on the centre of the N53 has been removed at Rassan, Phillipstown and Rathmore and replaced by a broken white line. This in effect gives motorists licence to overtake on a busy road where there are junctions onto minor roads.
“There has been a lot of controversy over the safety of the new junctions at Rathmore and Phillipstown. Motorists are finding it very difficult to come from side roads onto the main road due to speeding and the absence of filter lanes and right – turning boxes.
“I see no justifiable reason for this recent work. It is going to increase the dangers to road users. I have asked the County Council officials to provide reports as to why this work has taken place and we are all awaiting this information from the National roads Authority.”
