Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carty who recently returned from a four day trip to Palestine and Israel as part of a European MEP delegation will be the main speaker at the annual Brian Keenan Lecture which takes place in the Ti Chulainn Centre Mullaghbawn on Friday the 26th of September, commencing at 8pm.
Speaking at the launch of the event the recently elected MEP said “It is a great privilege to speak at the annual lecture and I look forward to sharing my experiences of the recent visit” and he explained “The delegation included my fellow Sinn Féin MEPs Martina Anderson (who headed the delegation) and Lynn Boylan as well as a further ten MEP’s from six countries. On our trip to the West Bank and Jerusalem I was struck by the apartheid system that the Israeli government has employed. The Palestinian people are living under a regressive occupation and it is up to the international community to support them. The very fact that Israel denied our delegation access into Gaza shows their disregard for international diplomacy. The Israeli regime believes it is above the law and this has to be highlighted and challenged”.
On Saturday the 27th of September the annual Vol. Brian Keenan Mountain Challenge will take place. This year there are optional walks with the first walk starting at 12noon at Newry Flagstaff and the second from the Long Woman’s Grave at 2pm. Both walks finish at the Four Seasons Carlingford and anyone wishing to participate can park their cars there as transport to the start points is available. Entry fee is £10/€10.
